Scholarship
The American Brewers Guild and
Berkshire
Brewing Company are proud to announce the 2011 Greg
Noonan Scholarship has been awarded to Dana Bourque of Stafford
Springs, CT.There were many excellent and very
deserving candidates. It was a very difficult decision for the
selection committee and not one that they made lightly. Greg would
have been proud to know that such worthy people wish to carry on his
legacy in the Craft Brewing Industry. The proceeds from the
sale of a special barrel aged Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, brewed by
Berkshire Brewing in honor of Greg, funded the tuition for this
scholarship.
The first 22 weeks of the courses are comprised of instruction in brewing science and engineering including the theory, science and technology of brewing processes that convert barley to beer. Special emphasis is placed on practical issues such as raw materials quality and assessment, practical wort production, yeast propagation and handling, and fermentation and finishing practices. For those who enroll in the Craft Brewers Apprenticeship Program, the next five weeks consists of practical on-site training as a working brewer at a host brewery with a selected Guild approved mentor.
